“You must be imaginative and strong-hearted. You must try things that may not work, and you must not let anyone define your limits because of where you come from. Your only limit is your soul.” —Ratatouille (Pixar)
Allison began her path of helping people years before she started her graduate program in clinical psychology. As an undergrad, she worked in a high school setting providing at risk girls with peer group workshops. She encountered fellow high school friends who struggled with depression and suicidal issues. In these she realized that helping make a difference in one’s emotional life brought her meaning and contentment. These experiences led her to want to pursue a career as a marriage, family therapist.
At this point in her path Allison is still getting an exact feel for her approach. What she knows is that she works integratively, utilizing many theories, techniques and concepts to better understand a client and how to address her client’s needs. She uses a mixture of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy along with a Narrative Therapy back drop. She tries to provide a relationship for clients to create a new narrative for themselves and challenge their own negative thinking. She does this by having a compassionate, intelligent, pragmatic, warm and direct way in her relationship to clients. She focuses on creating a strong relationship where clients have a space to work with themselves and feel heard.
As a Latina, raised in a European white family, she is acutely aware of the importance of cultural lens when sitting with clients. She feels especially capable of working with members of the Latinix community along with the LGBTQIA+ communities. And wishes to give back to the communities by providing psychotherapy that is grounded both in traditional and social justice frameworks.
Areas of experience and interest for Allison are:
Coming Out Issues
Anxiety & Depression
